The Camalle path
Known since ancient times, slate has been used and appreciated as a building material throughout Liguria (it is said that the Romans called the tribe that inhabited these areas Tigullii, as they were accustomed to building the roofs of their houses with "tegole" (tiles) made of this stone). In particular, the variety extracted in the Tigullio area has established itself as the most prized in the world, given its incredible malleability. Between the municipalities of Cogorno and Lavagna, you can still walk along the "camalle paths". The so-called “camalle” were girls and women who, by resting the slabs of freshly extracted and worked slate on their heads, walked down these steep paths to the shores of Lavagna, where the slate was loaded onto ships to be sold. An excursion that will take us through charming staircases shaded by chestnut trees and now-disused quarries until we reach the top of Mount S. Giacomo to enjoy the panoramic view that embraces the entire Gulf of Tigullio from Sestri Levante to Portofino.
